Around midnight, we arrived by ferry in the city of Beppu on the island of Kyushu. In a park near the harbor, we easily found a public toilet with space to camp. It wasn’t until daybreak that we realized we had arrived in one of Japan’s most important spa towns: There was steam coming out of the ground everywhere and the smell of sulphur was in the air.

Shivering on Shikoku
Until now, longer ferry passages had always brought with them a major change of scenery. This time, after a three-hour crossing, we were still in Japan and that was a good thing… because there is so much more to see in this country, like the island of Shikoku, for example.
About explorers, cheese fondue and station masters
After breakfast, our host at the B&B asked us to take a seat by the fire and wait. He had to leave briefly and would be back in a quarter of an hour. As we only had a short day ahead of us anyway, there was no need to rush and we enjoyed the cozy warmth a little longer…
From Osaka to Tokyo through the Japanese Alps
The international passenger port of Busan was very well organized. We were allowed to drop off our bikes with all our bags at the freight terminal, which we found without any problems thanks to a description of several pages. There was so much space on the ferry that we were able to spend the night alone in the 8-person room and seize the only small table by the drinks machines. There, we made the acquaintance of a Belgian couple, which made for a very entertaining and amusing crossing.
