Nothing reminded us more of the mountains and vibrant fall forests of Colorado when we saw the striking mesas of Monument Valley just a day’s ride from Cortez. They were only visible in the distance, but it was magical to roll towards them in the evening light!
In the friendly town of Lander, it was easy to make ambitious plans for our rode on: on a gravel road through the Great Basin, hiking in the Medicine Bow National Forest and driving along the Trail Ridge Road through the Rocky Mountain National Park…
After we soaked up enough relaxed summer atmosphere in Waterton, we decided to go on a hike after all. This took us directly from the campsite over the windy Carthew Pass, which rewarded us with wonderful views over the high alpine landscape with its colorful rocks. From our destination at Cameron Lake, we wanted to hitchhike back to the village.
Our stay at Beats cottage in Haines Junction was extended day by day.
From Palmer, we followed Parks Highway north. The first two days were not super exciting, riding past shopping malls, industrial areas, and endless private property.
